From now through September 14th, use the promo code EASYSALE to receive up to 50% off final sale item at J.Crew. On average a sport coat costs $300 or more. I purchased the linen sport coat above for $99 USD after an additional 50% off discount. A great deal for a quality brand and a highly regarded coat based on customer reviews (4.7/5). Check the Simple Style Manual on how a sport coat should fit.

Good Suit is Attainable by Following Simple Style Guidelines and a Good Tailor
The suit in the photo was purchased in March during a sale at Express. I was drawn to it because of the color, pattern, and the low cost of $160 after tax. Similar design and material can go for over $1,000, depending on the label of the suit. What I am attempting to illustrate here is by following simple guidelines from the Simple Style Manual, anyone can get their hands on an affordable off-the-rack suit and turn it into a thing of beauty (with the help of a tailor).
When buying an off the rack suit, you need to realize it is not made to conform to your body. It is meant to fit an "every man" by utilizing a loose fitting design. To start, you must find a suit that:
A good starting point may be a slim fit suit. Beyond the above features, find a suit with a design and color you like and make the following 5 alterations:
The after photo were taken at a summer wedding. It was very windy hence the jacket opened up in the shot above.
5 Basic Alterations:
By having your tailor make the 5 alterations, you will achieve a modern fit that will flatter your body. The total cost of the alterations was only $65, bringing the grand total to $225. It is amazing what a good tailor can do to your wardrobe.
How can you find a good tailor? I recommend getting a referral to a local tailor through a well-dressed friend. Or use sites like YELP to find a highly regarding tailor. Test his/her skills by having the tailor do simple work like hemming your jeans. If you are satisfied, move onto more difficult task like altering dress shirts then finally to an off-the-rack suit. Once you locate a good tailor, you will wonder how you went on without one for so long. Use the Simple Style Manual to alter other apparel for that perfect fit. I hope this post illustrates the power of a good tailor and following simple style guidelines. If there are any questions, feel free to contact me.
